Hyloxalus anthracinus Edwards, 1971 - Ecuador

Description

Hyloxalus anthracinus has smooth skin on the forelimbs, on the underside and on the head, and on the back of the body a slightly granular skin; oblique lateral stripe yellow to gray; dorsolateral stripe absent. The back is lightbrown, brown or darkbrown; the venter yellow to creamy white in females, dark gray to solid black with yellow groin in males; limbs colored like dorsum, with or wothout dark bars; palms and soles like belly. Finger I = finger II; toes not webbed.

Diagnosis

Many cryptic species of the genera Allobates, Anomaloglossus, Aromobates, Colostethus, Ectopoglossus, Hyloxalus and Silverstoneia are extremely difficult to distinguish externally from each other, both within the genus and across genera. A differentiation from similar species is also complicated by the large number of these species, unknown distribution patterns and undescribed species. The call is often the surest way to accurately determine. Unfortunately, most of the species lack a recording and a description of the call is only available in a few cases.
Hyloxalus anthracinus can be distingiushed from most other species by its black ventral coloration in males.

Size

Adult males are in a range of 16.2-19.0 mm (n=14) of snout-cloaca length and females with a measurement of 17.1-23.6 mm (n=15) larger than males.

Sexual dimorphism

Sexual dimorphism is exhibited only by males being slightly smaller and slimmer than females and the black venter in males (yellow-white in females).

Finger I = Finger II; Zehen ohne Spannhäute.

Diagnose

Ruf
